The year is 1910, and Halley’s Comet is streaking through the sky. For Steven Pike, it’s a new start after two years in prison. He has been given a job as an under-butler at the estate of Viscount Lord Stockingham-Welt, on a private island. The lord has called a meeting of everyone and has declared the comet will destroy the world, and everyone is to be locked in and sealed in their room until morning. Steve is assigned to watch over Miss Decima Stockingham, who is 75 and considered crazy. Steven finds she’s far from it. She’s smart as a whip and has a dirty mouth. They watch the comet together that night outside, and the next morning Steven finds the Lord dead. The police are called, and everyone is a suspect. Decima and Steven team up to find the murderer, and when they figure out who it was, they’re in for a shock it was not who they were expecting. This is a great book, with one of the best new characters in a long time, Decima Stockingham. This will be one of the best books of 2026.
