Detective Hulda has come back to work after a horrible family tragedy. She may have come back too soon but she’s back. She’s assigned a case that has two dead bodies and it may tie into a case she’s been working on of a young girl named Unnur, who has disappeared. She took a gap year before college and decided to wonder around Iceland working on a book. She’s had very little contact with her parents.
The case takes her to the farm of Einar and Eria, who live in a remote area and have hardly any contact with anyone during the winter. Then one night in 1987 before Christmas a man named Leo shows up at their house, claiming that he was separated from the hunting party he was with. They give him shelter for the night and he’s suppose to leave the next morning. He can’t because of the weather and Eria grows suspicious of him. And she soon convinces Einar as well and they confront this man and it turns deadly. Just who is he and why has he shown up at their house?
Told via flashbacks and real time we learn the whole shocking truth of what has gone on. There’s many twists and turns you won’t see coming and it leads up to Hulda having to solve this case and in the process come to terms with her own personal issues.
A page-turning thriller that keeps the reader engaged throughout the story. Ranga Jonasson is a masterful story-teller and his Iceland series just keeps getting better and better.
