A carousel built in the year 1900 is at the center of mysterious disappearances over a number of years. In Paris, Detective Laurent is investigating a number of missing people and probable deaths of several people after riding the carousel. In England, Maisie Marlowe is in a foster home when her Aunt Mabel finally comes and takes her to the home of Sir Malcolm. When she dies, as does Malcolm’s daughter, he moves them to Chicago, where he learns about the carousel. He buys it and sets it up on his estate. When a little boy goes missing while riding it, the police find no evidence of what happened to him. Then another child goes missing a few years later. Laurent arrives from Paris and begins an investigation, and soon falls for Maisie, who falls for him as well. When he returns to Paris, she finds out he’s married, and learns about who her parents really are, and Laurent finally figures out the mystery of the carousel. A solid mystery, with some gothic thrown in, and romance, that keeps you reading along. The attention to detail of Chicago at that time, and of the amusement park, enhances the story. Well worth a read.
