Cotton Malone is asked to check out the house of a Cardinal of the Vatican, Jason Richter, who is accused of stealing money. He’s close to the Pope and is going to help pick a successor. Cotton finds the money and booby-trap and then the police suddenly show up. He soon figures out he was set up, as was Jason. Another scandal is about to rock the Vatican as well, Eric Casaburi, an Italian Politician, who learns he’s the rightful descendant of the Medici family, who ruled centuries ago and is entitled to a lot of money owed to his family from an agreement, which was signed with a Pledge of Christ. Cotton goes on a deadly search for the document, which hasn’t been seen since it was signed. There are forces that never want this to see the light of day. A dangerous hitman, a stunning horse race (this is a great segment in the novel), betrayals and twists and turns highlight another great book in the series. Longtime fans will enjoy this one.
