Missy Cooke’s parents divorced when she was young. Her mother never got over it, and struggled, and wasn’t the best mother. Her father, Marty Cooke, became rich and famous in the tech industry, and showed up when he could on weekends, when he showed up, and spoiled her. Today, Missy works at his company, which has grown a lot over the years, is dating Jerome, and there are high expectations on her. When Marty gets sick and has to go to Switzerland for treatment, Missy is made the interim CEO, and is out of her league. She tries the best she can, and when a bad profile piece is released in the papers, she is sent to Europe for meetings and to get out of the public eye. She has Jerome with her, her new friends from India, and Missy has to figure out who she is and what she wants going forward. This is an intense, well-written character-driven novel that at it’s core is about family. We get to follow Missy’s life and the choices she makes, and watch her grow up and find herself. One of the first good books of the fall.
