Lewis Dixon is a gay black man living in Baltimore who is a painter. He’s at the hospital after losing his mother when he’s approached by a strange woman telling him he will be going to London. Within a few months, he gets an invite to the British Museum to show one of his paintings. It turns out there is something else going on. The museum is a front for a secret magical society, and Noah Rao reveals that magic is in fact, real. Lewis soon learns his great-grandfather created a series of magical paintings called ‘The Macabre’ and they need to be found and destroyed, and Lewis is the only one that can do this. He travels all over the world finding and destroying some of them, but someone else is on his trail and tries to get to them before he does. Turns out there’s a lot more going on in the magical world, and not everyone can be trusted, and a final showdown between the good people and the bad people. This is a great magical escape that starts off fast and never lets up. The characters, the story are top-notch, and this is one of the best books of the year.
