Brent Walker is a lawyer who left his hometown of Concord, Georgia ten years ago. He had been married to Paula but in love with Ashley, the daughter of his close friend Hank. When he told his wife it was over, she killed herself an hour later and he has lived with the guilt. Two years ago his father died in a boating accident and he has returned to take care of his ailing mother and take a job at Southern Republic Pulp and Paper, working in the legal department. It’s time to negotiate a new contract with employees and Hank gets some info about the company, including a list of mysterious numbers. When Brent investigates, he finds they are employees’ social security numbers and that they are retired or current employees and all dead. The company has a hitman department to take out people costing them a lot of money in medical and benefits and makes each death seem natural. One of the owners is dying and leaves all the sorted information to Brent, putting his life and Hanks in danger, leading to a climactic, thrilling ending. This book was written years ago as author Steve Berry’s second novel and was never published. He took another look at it during covid and this is the result. An intense well-written legal novel that is as good as any other legal novel written. The action, the setting and twists and turns make this a real page-turner.
