Rey is about to turn 75, and has lived his whole life in the Mission District of San Francisco. He was married to Juliet, who died a few years ago, and they had signed a ten-year lease for their current apartment, and planned to move to a retirement home when the lease is up, which is in 30 days. Rey barely gets through every day, missing his wife so much. He has a broom and is always cleaning the front walk, works two shifts at the library, and knows what is going on in his building. He isn’t sure where he wants his life to go, and is thinking about ending it when his lease is up, rather than moveing When he meets Q, a young gay woman, who is 21, and he has seen her grow up, his life changes. She is homeless, on probation, and he invites her to move in. She starts to become the daughter he never had, a breath of fresh air. He smokes pot with her, rides a bike, and they hangout together. Rey starts to rethink his upcoming life choices and has big decisions to make. This is an intense, well-written, character-driven novel that you will not want to put down. You follow along with these two characters and watch them become great friends and root for Rey to make the right choice. This is one of the best novels of the year.
