Detective Jimmy Perez is back after a long absence and is with his partner Willow, who is also his boss at the police station. When Jimmy learns his best friend, Archis, has vanished, he is on the case looking for him, and finds his dead body on the island of Westray. He was killed by an ancient stone, stolen from a heritage center. Willow, who is pregnant and six weeks from delivering, takes over the case on Westray and soon learns there are a number of potential suspects. Jimmy has returned home and is working the case from his end. When other murderers take place, Jimmy finds a pattern to them and trying to find the murderer is becoming more difficult by the day. It leads to a shocking finale you don’t see coming. This is my first time reading one of these Jimmy Perez novels, and it was great. The two lead characters are well-written, and the story is intense and page-turning. Fans who read the previous novels and new fans will enjoy this murder mystery.
