Ellen Saint cannot believe her eyes as she looks across to the building from where she is and sees him Kieran. No it can’t be…he’s dead and I killed him. He killed her son Lucas years ago when the car he was driving went into the water. He spent time in jail but got out and went on with his life. The grief was too much and Ellen, along with her ex Vic (the father of Lucas) came up with a plan to have him killed. Somehow he survived it and has gone on with a new name and life. For Ellen it’s too much and she still wants him gone. But she soon learns shocking details about what really happened back then and it’s too much for her. The book tells the story of what happened then from the viewpoint of Ellen and Vic, with different accounts of things. But one thing is for sure…Kieran will be dead and how he died is what leads up to the twist in the story. I have been a fan of author Louise Candlish’s last few novels (The Other Passenger, Our House and Those People) and this is a good twisty novel but not as good as the last few. I was excited about what the story was but the execution left me a little flat. Still the twists and turns make for an enjoyable novel once you finish it.
You can pick up The Heights in stores on Tuesday, March 1st from Atria.
