The year is 1893 in Vienna and Leopold von Herzfeldt has arrived to be an inspector with the Vienna Security Bureau. He hears about a brutal killing of a young girl and decides to help out on the investigation, even though he doesn’t start until the next day and rubs everyone the wrong way. Augustin Rothmayer is a gravedigger, at the Central Cemetery, and actually likes his job. He also writes an almanac about his experiences working with dead people. When a series of other deaths of young girls take place, Leo ends up teaming up with August and Julia, a woman at the police department to investigate them, drawing the ire of his boss and other inspectors. They soon learn of a series of secret parties that may be the key to solving the murders, exposing possible police corruption and are in for quite a few shocks when everything is revealed. This is an intense, well-written novel, that keeps you engaged throughout. The three main characters are enjoyable and I hope we get more novels with them.
