Anna was a professional dancer who met the man of her dreams Matthias in Paris. They fell in love and got married. They ended up moving to St. Louis for his work and Anna was alone a lot. Before they left Paris her fears and anxieties started kicking in. She started eating less and soon was barely eating at all. It was the same in St. Louis. There were times when she fainted and finally they had to fess up and get Anna help. She went but didn’t want to. Soon she was in a treatment center at 17 Swann Street. It specializes in helping women with eating disorders.
There are strict rules for being there that each girl must follow. It includes eating all you meals, meeting with nutritionists, psychologists and other strict rules. Anna fights it at every step and is not happy. Matthias is able to visit every night which makes Anna happy but she wonders why he bothers. He loves her and she loves him but it angers him she doesn’t seem to want to fight for her live or for them.
Through flashbacks we learn about Anna’s life and the things she has gone through. We also learn about her meeting and relationship with Matthias. Now she has to dig down deep inside herself to figure out if saving her life and her marriage to Matthias is going to happen.
This is the debut novel form author Yara Zgheib and it’s outstanding. Yara has painted a picture of a woman on the edge and the other women as well that are there. This could be any woman or man that has an eating disorder (which is a very common thing that people have). Some are able to overcome it and go on to lead new lives. Yara looks at it from both sides looking at it from every angle. You root for Anna throughout the book and hope that she will be able to survive and come to terms with her eating disorder and get back to her life with Matthias.
