Holmes, Margaret & Poe, detectives, are in a state of change. After their home was burned down by their nemesis, Oliver Paul, they are living in a rundown lodge in upstate New York. The relationship between Holmes and Margaret has cooled off, and Poe and Grey are expecting twins, but are having issues as well between them. When a dead body shows up in a fishing shack, Holmes is framed for the murder by Paul, and a shady lawyer shows up to defend him, hired by Paul. He is causing havoc in the country and wants his wife, Agnes, who is in prison because of the three of them, released, or he will continue to make trouble. They soon involve the FBI, Agnes is moved to a secure underground prison, and Margaret comes up with a dangerous plan to flush Paul out once and for all, and which leads to a climactic showdown. There’s also a side story involving Margaret and French cooking, and a creepy chef, who harasses his female students. This is the third novel in this series, and it’s another good one. There’s a lot of character devolpment and relationships are tested. Fans of the first two will enjoy this one.
