The year is 1816 and England is a place where gay love is accepted and marriage is allowed. It’s also a place where there are people who have magic, called Brillants. Marriage contracts are normal for people entering it as a business arraignment, where vomsmiths negotiate the terms. Lord Nicolas Monterris, who is gay, and Lady Leaf Serrel are to be married and the terms are negotiated in what is called a locked-in house until terms are agreed upon, even though neither one wants to get married. Leaf’s vowsmith is Dash, who once lived in Nic’s house and they fell in love, until Dash left, breaking Nic’s heart. They soon start having hot sex and putting the past behind them. When people in the house begin dying, Nic and Leaf start investigating who might be the killer and it leads to shocking secrets being revealed. All the while Nic is making plans to get out of the marriage and be married to Dash, if they can stay alive. This is a great novel filled with love, mystery and twists. Watching Nic and Dash fall back in love with each other is heartwarming and might be the best love story all year. The mystery is intense and this novel is one you will not want to put down.
