Alida is a circus freak, owned by Captain Forest Farnam, and paraded around in his oddities exhibit, and taken on road trips around the country. She has a deformed upper body. In September of 1930, Loretta and Franklin Fairchild, who are wealthy movie producers, spot her at one of her shows, and decide she needs to be freed. Finally, at the age of 17, she has gotten away from Captain and is taken to a big estate, where she has two sisters and a brother, and is legally adopted, and even has a dog named Rafael. Things are going great, and then Rafael is poisoned, and Alida hugs him, and he’s cured. We follow along with their lives as the years go on, and then one day Captain returns with threats, looking for money and leads to a showdown. This is an intense character-driven novel, at its core is about family and love. You get invested in their lives and it’s a pleasure to follow along with them through happiness and tragedy. Have tissues handy, you will need them. This is one of the best books of the year. Dean Koontz has done it again!
