The year is 1911, Shanghai, and Lisan Liu has been hired to be the private secretary for a wealthy American, Caroline Stanton, who has just moved her with her husband Thomas, and will live in Lennox House, a mansion that needs work. When she gets there, she also finds out that servants think the house is haunted, a man committed suicide, and a woman in red vanished. When a grand party takes place, Caroline has been seen by a man who knows her shocking secret, and Lisan is seen by a woman who knows about her secret past, she was orphaned at a young age. Soon, Lisan learns her shocking past, and Caroline has to deal with a blackmailer and the sudden illness of her husband. When Lisan puts the pieces together about Caroline’s past, it puts her life in danger and leads to a shocking turn of events. This is a well-written gothic novel that includes a good look at the events and culture of Shanghai at the time. The story has lots of twists and turns you don’t see coming, and it will keep you reading along.
