The year is 1949 in Paris, and the war has been over for five years now. The city is getting back to what it was before, more people are living here, the nightlife has returned, and food rations are finally over. For Kat and her husband, Charlie, a well-known foreign correspondent, life goes on. Kat was a reporter until the men returned from the war and took back all the jobs. She is taking a cooking class, and her partner is Toby, the only man in the class who is nice to her. On this night, when she goes to the fridge to get her supplies, she finds him stabbed to death. After being interviewed by the police and telling his girlfriend he is dead, Kat thinks there’s a lot more to his death than the police are telling her. She decides to investigate on her own. Then his girlfriend is found dead by Charlie, who becomes the prime suspect. He was working on a murder case from 1944 that was never solved, and Kat thinks he was set up because of that case. When she finally figures everything out, someone takes her and plans to kill her. This is the debut novel from author Helwig, and it’s a good one. The character of Kat is a strong, determined woman who will stop at nothing to get the truth. The story grabs you from the beginning and never lets up. An enjoyable novel set in Paris that you will not want to put down.
