Sheriff Walt Longmire has a lot going on in his town of Absaroka County, Wisconsin. Fires have broken out because of the dry weather. A Russian spy named Maxim Sidorov, who once tried to kill Walt, is moving to town, and Walt has to be his parole officer. If that’s not enough, at the O-Kay Ranch, Pepper McKay, the owner, is found dead in his trout stream. It’s ruled a murder, and there are a number of suspects, including his four sons, and neighbors with whom he didn’t get along. Pepper was a horrible man, and Walt needs to interview all the potential suspects on numerous occasions, and then there is another murder. When the wildfires spread, evacuations are ordered, and Walt gets stuck in one of them chasing who he thinks might be the killer. It’s a fight for survival for Walt, with the help of an unusual ally a mule, named Borax. This is the 22nd novel in the series and another great one. The murder mystery, the Russian man, who provides comic relief, and Borax the mule make this a must-read in the series. Longtime fans will enjoy this one.
