The book is a sequel to the previous book, The Gray Wolf, in which Armand Gamache foiled a plot to poison the Montreal water system, and they thought they had the black wolf, the man in charge of it. He soon discovers there may still be a plot taking place that is just as deadly, and he, along with Jean-Guy and Isabelle, are trying to figure out the diaries left by Charles Langlois, who died right before Gamache, before he could tell him the plot. He leaves no stone unturned, and can only trust a few people, as he feels this plot has people in law enforcement and the government involved, and it might turn out that the United States could be involved. It’s a race against time to figure out what’s going on before it’s too late. This is the 20th novel in the series, and it’s another great one. Author Louise Penny has pulled out all the stops, and this one will keep you on the edge of your seat.
