Gertie Bingham and her husband Harry started a bookstore years ago in London, that became successful. In the year of 1938, two years after Harry died, Gertie is still running the shop. Once a month they book clubs, and everyone is worried about the Germans, and England becoming involved. When Gertie is asked to take in a German child, at first she’s not sure, but soon takes in Hedy. As the days go by, and London is under attack, Gertie, Hedy, and the bookstore family become closer, and hold Air Raid Book Clubs during the raids, in the bomb shelters. As the days, and years go by, close friends, and family are killed, destruction rains in London, but the spirit of Gertie never wavers, and together they all do what they can to survive the war. Fans of WWII novels will love this one. It’s well-written, with interesting characters, and a look at what life during the war was like.

You can pick up The Air Raid Book Club in stores on Tuesday, July 11th from William Morrow.
