Imagine if you will in the near future a machine in this book called Apricty, which with a little of your DNA can tell you what you need to do to be better contented in your life. It’s that simple. It may just say eat more fruits, go on a trip or just smile. Simple little things that a lot of us do take for granted. The people that take the suggestions seem to have a difference in their lives. But is it just a subconscious thing once you’re told or a true list of things that actually work.
The story follows a few select people including Pearl, who works for the company that makes Apricity, her son Rhett (who has an eating disorder), her ex-husband Elliot and his new wife Val and a scream queen actress named Calla Pax. Each have their own stories and experiences with the machine with interesting results. We also learn their back stories and why they are the way they are now and how/if the machine actually helped them. It does ask one question and that is how far are you willing to go and if you think this machine is actually worth listening to?
This is author Katie Williams first adult novel, won by publisher Riverhead in an auction last year. The book has also been sold internationally and TV Rights have been sold for a series currently in development.
It’s a fascinating debut novel that has funny moments, interesting characters and a look into a something that could be in the future. With technology and science the way they are anything is possible.
You can check it out when Tell The Machine Goodnight releases on Tuesday, June 19.
