Laurel Applebaum is fed up with ther husband Doug. He’s been out of work for a couple of years now, money is tight and they owe a lot and he expects her take care of everything. When she gets a call from the hospital that there has been an accident, she actually hopes he has died and she can cash in his big life insurance policy. But not such luck, he survives and is the same pain in the ass. Then she starts thinking what it he does die and she can get the money. She puts a series of events in play hoping it will cause him to die but nothing seems to work. But she keeps trying and the story then takes off in a different direction and Laurel gets a spine and she and Doug try to figure out where their marriage will go, if he manages to stay alive. AUthor Ellen Meister always writes good novels and this continues her streak, with a part dark comedy, character driven story that goes one way then another with a character in Laurel that you root for.
