Jesse and Norman met when their bikes collided thirty years ago, and they are still together today. They are married and live in a house in Joshua Tree. They bicker like old married couples, laugh with each other, and are happy. It all ends one night when Jesse wakes up and finds Norman stepping into a beam of light, and is taken away by aliens. For the first time in his life Jesse is alone, and confused. Did his husband really take off with aliens? As the days and weeks go by, Jesse takes stock of his life and moves on. He returns to teaching, gets a dog, and digs a hole in the back yard. He also has to deal with Norman’s sister, who is looking for her brother, and wants the frozen eggs she gave them to have a baby, which never worked out for Jesse and Norman. Then a year later everything changes again, and Jesse has to figure out what it is he wants. This is an intense, emotional look at one man, his love for his husband, and suddenly being left alone. Watching him go through his new life is amazing, and hearwarming, as he picks up the pieces of his life. Author Steven Rowley has done it again, with another great novel.
