The year is 1944 and in London, they’re dealing with bombings, food rationing and death. Charlie Matters is 13, lost his parents and grandpa and lives with his grandmother who does everything she can to raise and support him. He takes to the streets at night and steals and does what he can to help out. He steals money from Ignatius Oliver, who owns a bookstore and is a widow and he returns the money out of guilt and the two become friends. Molly Wakefield, who is almost sixteen, returns home after being sent away four years ago and is looking forward to seeing her parents again, but they are both missing. She meets Charlie and asks for his help and they become friends and she soon becomes friends with Oliver as well. When tragedies strike, Oliver takes them in and they become a family and have to deal with danger all around them, as the war is winding down. Author Baldacci usually writes thrillers and this is his first time writing a historical fiction novel. He has proven he can write anything, this novel is incredible. The setting, the plot and the characters are all top-notch. This is a page-turning novel and one of the best books of the year so far.
