Aisling was brought up in a strict Irish Catholic home, in County Clare, with an alcoholic mother, who abused her. She figured out in high school, in 2013, that she was gay, and had a secret girlfriend, but it didn’t work out. Now she’s at college in Edinburgh, and meets Maya, who is dating Ethan, but is drawn to Aisling, and soon Maya is confused about her sexuality, and they deny for a while what is between them. She breaks it off with Ethan, and they become a couple. They’re happy for a while, but Aisling’s mother’s abuse has taken a toll on her, and she doesn’t drink, but sees Maya out having good times, and worries about her, and what their future, if they have one, will be like together. This is an intense, character-driven, emotional debut novel from author Clementine Taylor. You get engaged in reading the love story of these two main characters, and root for them to be together. A perfect fall book.
