Author Iris Johansen is back with her 26th book in her Eve Duncan series. She is also with a new publisher Grand Central and this book centers on Eve after the last few were about Cara. This time Eve is tricked into going to a small African village to help reconstruct children killed by a madman only to find out it was a p;an to track down if the madman is actually dead as has been reported.

Eve is going to be home for a month by herself when her son Michael goes to England to go on a dig with his sister Jane. Her husband Joe is also going to the UK for training with Scotland yard. They both want Eve to go but she has too much work to do with her reconstructions. When Jill Cassidy asks for an interview Eve allows it only to be told about the African village and what happened to the kids. Jill begs her to go there and help find the homes for the children. Eve is pissed about this but decides to go. Once there she finds not everything is what it seems. Yes there are children to reconstruct but she is ultimately told about the man with the machete. There is also the Queen who is not what she seems. After Eve is poisoned Joe flies there and takes command working with Jill, a man named Gideon and the local CIA head Novak.

They formulate a plan to uncover what is going on once and for all and it could cost people their lives once all is said and done.

This is the next great book in the series. Iris has gotten back to the basics centering the story around Eve and Joe. They have a magical love story that cannot be denied. The characters are great, the stories intense and always fun to read. If you’ve never read one of Iris Johansen’s books about Eve Duncan, Kendra Michaels or Catherine Ling now is the time to jump in. You don’t have to have read any of the previous books to understand what’s going on. Iris gives enough back story to understand everything.

You can pick up Smokescreen in stores on Tuesday, July 30th and mark your calendars for the new Kendra Michaels book Hindsight on Tuesday, January 7th.
