During the depression, Chicago came up with the world’s fair, a huge event to help bring happiness to people. One of the feature performers is Madame Mystique, a burlesque dancer, who is really Rosa Mancuso, daughter of a mob king back in Sicily, whose family was murdered years ago by Pablo, who is coming to the fair as part of Italy’s flying team. Mina is the daughter of a gangster as well, got herself pregnant with a black man’s baby, and is being held until the baby is born, and then sent away. Mina wants to keep her baby, finds out about Rosa, and goes to her for help. They’re cousins, and she agrees to help her, while planning a way to kill Pablo when he arrives. A hit man named Danny, who works for Mina’s uncle, is on her tail with orders to bring her home. Rosa is determined to get Pablo, and to reunite Mina with her baby, no matter what. This is a great novel, that hooks you in from the beginning, and never lets up. The fair, the mob, and revenge, make you want to keep reading this page-turning novel.
