Mickey Gibson is a divorce, single mother of two young children. She’s an ex-cop, who has moved back to Williamsburg, Va. to be near her family. She’s taken a job with a firm called Proeye, which tracks down wealthy people cheating the system. When a woman named Arlene calls her, and tells her she has a job to do for her boss, she takes the assignment, to inventory the house of a foreclosed mansion, and goes to a house, where she finds a dead body. When the police arrive, she becomes a suspect, and it is soon learned the woman doesn’t work for the company. Mickey is cleared, receives more calls from Arlene, and is investigating the death, with the police, and on her own. She has a lot more details than the police, and it turns out Arlene knows Mickey, and is targeting her to help find out who killed the man, and it turns out he has a past mob tie, and has a lot of hidden money. But Arlene isn’t the only one that wants the money, and Mickey is pulled in deeper by different people, and it soon turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse, Who will find the money first, and who to trust? There are a lot of twists and turns, and a clever ending that ties everything together. Baldacci has written another great book.
