Book Review: ‘Shell Game’ Is The Next Exciting V.I. Warshawski Thriller

Author Sara Paretsky is back with her latest V.I. Warshawski novel titled Shell Game. This time she gets pulled in to help her friends nephew and her missing niece. When a dead man is found in the woods with the phone number of Felix and the police want him to come look at the body Vic is there to accompany him as his lawyer. Felix swears he doesn’t know the guy. She starts an investigation to figure out who he is and what kind of connection he has with Felix.

Meanwhile hew niece Harmony shows up in town looking for her sister Reno (they are actually her ex-husbands Dick family) but they still consider Vic family. So now Vic has two investigations she is doing. Trying to find Reno is proving tricky and it also means having to talk with her ex Dick (and these conversations are hilarious) as they do not like each other. It also puts Vic in danger as there are people that want her snooping and are looking for something Reno had. She is attacked more than once and her poor dog is even injured. But Vic won’t go down easy and discovers clues and where Reno might be and how she is connected to the dead man. Racing against time she needs to save and expose the bad guys before it’s too late.

This is my second time reading a V.I. novel and she is one smart, tough woman who will go to no ends to find the answers she needs even if it endangers her live. You don’t have to have read any of the other books as Sara gives good back story on characters and who is who and what they have done. Vic is right up there with any other great detective story being written today. Her cute dogs and hatred of her ex make the story that much more enjoyable.

You can pick it up in stores on Tuesday, October 16.
