It’s Christmas Eve, and Dr. Kay Scarpetta, who is the Virginia medical examiner, is finishing up work on Rowdy O’Leary, whose body was pulled from the Potomac River and she can’t determine yet if it was a suicide. The next day, Kay and her husband, Benton, are planning on leaving town for Europe for a two-week vacation. Early on Christmas morning, Kay gets a call from Marino, her brother-in-law and former police detective, there’s been another murder from the Phantom Slasher, who has been murdering people in the area for quite a while now. Her trip cancelled, she, along with Benton, who works with the CIA, and her niece Lucy, who works for the FBI, head to the scene of the crime, where one man has survived, and becomes the prime suspect. When she finds an escaped monkey in her greenhouse, it may solve the case once and for all. This is another thrilling novel in the series, complete with AI Janet, a robotic dog and Kay’s crazy sister Dorothy. Fans of the series will enjoy this one.
