Savvy Summers is back for her second novel on the South Side of Chicago. Not a lot is going on right now. She is running her restaurant, Essie’s Place, and working on some new recipes. Her friend Dori asks her to cater an event at her work, and she agrees to it and makes po’boys. The next day, Savvy makes Dori some special po’boys, and at Dori’s office, one of her co-workers eats one and dies. It’s later determined she was poisoned, and Dori is the main suspect. Essie decides to some investigation, much to the chagrin of her ex-husband, who is a cop, and soon finds herself in danger when she comes face to face with the murderer. She gets help from an unexpected source. This is a good follow-up to the first novel, with lots of character development, backstory, and a good group of quirky supporting characters. Fans of the first one, or new fans, will enjoy this one.
