Madeline Hill’s dad left her and her mother on their farm, in Tennessee, twenty years ago and never looked back. Since then she and her mom have made the farm successful, even being featured in magazines. Today a man named Reuben Hill arrives at the farm and has a story for Madeline, he is her half-brother. Turns out her father has quite a secret past, having moved around a lot, used different names and father not only Reuben but Pepper (a sister in college) and Tom, who is eleven. Rube, his nickname, asks Mad, her nickname, to go with her on a trip to meet their other siblings and then to California to confront their father, who Rube has found via a private detective. It’s quite the roadtrip, as the four get to know each other and when they finally meet their father, it’s not quite the reunion they expect. A fun road trip that hits all the right notes. It’s well-written and at it’s core about family. Might be the most interesting road trip novel this year.
