Author Brianna Wolfson’s debut novel is now available in paperback and what a debut it is. It is an emotional masterpiece that looks at divorce and how it affects the kids and also depression and drug addiction. It’s a tour de force novel from an author that has a bright future ahead of her.
They say opposites attract and that statement is never more evident with Rosie and Rex. They’re polar opposites. She’s a free spirit and he is uptight. She likes to free flow it and he likes to have things planned out. Yet they feel in love and in New York City and had two kids. They moved to Virginia when Rosie was pregnant with their daughter Willow, who is currently in fifth grade and their boy Asher. Shortly after Asher’s birth four years ago Rosie got depression and got addicted to pills. Soon after they divorced and worked out a shared custody.
On the days the kids are with Rex he is very structured and leaves lists to make sure they do everything they should. He also is short tempered and basically not a lot of fun. Rosie on the other hand is a spitfire. She loves blaring Prince, going for pizza, have spaghetti night and dressing up and watching Rocky Horror Picture show. The kids love being at mom’s house.
But soon Rosie becomes erratic and Rex is having to pull the kids away from her and soon we learn the depths of her suffering and what makes Rex the way he is. The story goes from the past when they met, moved, had the kids to the present in alternating chapters so we learn their whole story. Willow idolizes her mother and it’s hard on her when she can’t be around her. Soon Rex has to put the past behind him and try to get through to his kids before he it’s too late.
