Jesse Stone is on night patrol when he stops and arrests a man, Ramsey Devlin, for drunk driving and attempted assault, as the man took a swing at him. The next day, Jesse learns who he is, a man the US government just prosecuted for a pyramid scam, and Ramsey was acquitted, and who is very rich. He is now making Jesse’s life hell in Paradise. They have had a few runi-ns, as had Molly, when she threw a drink in Ramsey’s face. He is now threatening to sue for a lot of money. When Jesse goes to his house to try and make peace, he finds an open door and a pool of blood. The case is turned over to the state police, and he’s suspended, and it looks like he is the main suspect, even though there is no body. As he fights to clear his name, as does Molly, his son Cole arrives to be his lawyer. When he finally puts the pieces together, it leads to a climactic showdown. This is the 23rd novel in the series, and it’s another good one. Jesse is on top of his game, and the supporting cast of characters gets a chance to shine. Longtime fans will enjoy this one.
