Maureen Denton, known to her friends as Mo, is from the Midwest, and has moved to New York to be a writer. She has an agent, and so far, nothing has been picked up by any publishers. Wes Spencer is a literary agent who used to work for Mo’s current agent until something happened, and he had to leave. He’s the one who brought Mo to her agent’s attention. Both have written new takes on the classic novel, The Proud and the Lost, and the daughter, Estelle, has never authorized any new takes on the novel. She becomes aware of the two and invites them both to come to her estate and pitch their novels. At first, the two spare, and then became friends, and then lovers. While they wait to hear back if either of them will be picked, they spend more time together, and Mo learns secrets of Wes that break their bond. Wes feels he has to make a grand gesture in order to win her back. This is a fun rom-com with two interesting characters and a good look at how the publishing world works. You root for these two to get together. A good summer beach read.
