Sheriff Walt Longmire is asked to go undercover by Postal Inspector Mike Thurman, a cousin of his late wife. Blair McGowan never showed up for her postal route, even though her car was in the parking lot. No one has seen or heard from her. Walt pretends to take over her postal route and follows the 307-mile route. Part of the route covers the vast Red Desert, where rumors of the Order of the Red Gate, a religious cult, has been spotted living. Rumors are that Blair is associated with them and they may be the reason she has vanished. Walt soon learns the cult is stealing money from their followers and soon Walt is in the desert trying to free Blair and other followers in a climactic showdown. This is another good Longmire novel, who along with dog the dog, find their lives in danger. The last third of this book is intense and page-turning. Fans of the longtime series will enjoy this one.
