A great debut novel from Shelby Van Pelt. It’s told from two sides of view…a woman Tova, who cleans an aquarium at night and an octupus named Marcellus, who is caged and has been for a long time and knows he will die here. Tova likes to talk to the creatures at night and feels like there her friends. She finds Marcellus out of his cage and stuck by a cord. She helps him escape the cord and back into his cage and he develops a fondness for her. Tova lost her son years ago when he fell off a boat. And now Marcellus thinks back to when he was in the sea and thinks he may have information about what happened all those years ago. This is a well-written book and it’s fun to hear the thoughts of Marcellus and how he wants to help Tova and another character Cameron. Shelby will be someone to watch in the future.
