Set in Victorian era London, at a young age, Reina Martin learns she is a bastard child, and in those times, it meant she wasn’t entitled to anything. She didn’t let that stop her, and in 1877 she became successful and made a lot of money and tried to open a bank account, and was turned down because she is a woman. In those days you a woman needed a man to open an account with a lot of money. She starts working with banker William Farlow, who owns a chain of banks and makes even more money buys a big house and has problems finding servants. She ends up hiring people on parole, as part of a program, to be her servants. She is also working with William on opening a bank just for women, when John Pembroke shows up to interview for the butler position. He is actually a copy who is undercover to investigate Reina and William, he is suspected of stealing money from his clients. He and Reina fall for each other and decide to work together, after he confesses why he is here, to figure out what William is really up to. This is a great historical look at the way women were treated and how one woman wants to change things, based on real-life women of that time. The convicts at the house become a family, and are a great supporting cast of characters, especially Mad Dog and Alan the dog. One of the best books of the year.
