Jake West is a lawyer and has had a tough year. His wife threw him out, he’s a horrible father to his kids, he was censured by the bar association, and he has a drinking problem. He works at his dad’s prestigious law firm, if you call it work and has to deal with his overbearing dad and his associates. On this day, his best friend Rich is assigned to watch over him, and they get into his car at the courthouse, and someone knocks on the window and shoots Rich in the head, and Jake becomes the prime suspect. Jake decides to try and clear his name and figure out why someone would kill Rich. He digs into his last case, defending a woman named Tiana, who is accused of setting a fire that killed two of her three kids. Jake takes the case, and nothing seems right about it. He gets fired from the firm and teams up with Javi, another close friend who is an investigator and starts to learn startling things about his dad’s practice, a crooked district attorney and vows to take down any and all crooked people. Author Joe Cowan has written one of the best legal thrillers of the year. An engaging plot, great supporting characters and Jake West, who despite his flaws, you root for against all odds. Hopefully, there will be more novels with these characters.
