The year is 1914, H.H. Asquith, who is 61 and married, is carrying on an affair with 26-year-old Venetia Stanley, with letters back and forth, and the occasional meetup. People around them know they have a friendship, but not the depths of what is going on between them, and seems he is a bit obsessed with her. With the war about to start, H.H. shares vital state secrets with her in his many letters, and it soon leaks out that someone is sharing secrets. DS Paul Deemer is told to look into who might be leaking secrets, and he soon discovers what’s going on between the pair and reports to his boss. As the days and years go by, we follow the war, the relationship between the two and the outcome of their relationship. This is a great historical fiction novel, based on the real life of Asquith and Stanley, and the letters he wrote to her are the actual letters he sent back then. Fans of these kind of novels will like this one.
