I love historical fiction novels. Every time I read one, I learn something new. A dual timeline story set in the 1950s and the early 2000s, and centers on two women and famed painter Jackson Pollock. In 2006, Sothebys sets a record for selling a Pollock, and soon after, a woman named Ruth Kligman called a smaller auction house claiming to have been Pollock’s lover before he died in a car crash, and she had what would be his last painting ever. Ruth wants them to sell it after she has had it for 50 years. The project is given to Gwen, a young up-and-coming employee in the company. She has 30 days to find out if it is real and get it on the auction block. What follows, in different time periods and chapters, is Ruth’s story of her life and relationship with Pollock. The story is based on the real life Ruth Kligman and the painting titled Red, Black & Silver, which at first wass dubbed a fake, and the Pollock estate said was a fake, but later deemed to be real. Author Kierman has written an outstanding novel looking at Ruth’s life and the painting. Fans of historical fiction will love this one.
