As a long-time fan of this series and these books, I was so happy they wrote an origin story. This book was awesome. It has everything you want from a Pendergast novel. Kudos to the authors, Preston & Child, for going back to his beginnings as an FBI agent, and they nailed it once again. The year is 1994 in August, and FBI special agent Dwight D. Chambers is awaiting his new junior partner, his lost his previous partner and he also lost his wife not too long ago. He is mentoring A.X.L. Pendergast, a brash young man, who is very smart, rich, and likes to do things that aren’t conventional. They are put on a suspension right away, and work on a cold case, which turns out involved a serial killer, which leads them to investigate a prime suspect, who turns up dead. They have a new suspect, and it becomes a game of cat and mouse, leading to a shocking, deadly showdown. Fans of this series will love this book.
