The year is 2022 and James, a gay man, living in England, is a librarian and his marriage has ended. He’s depressed and thinking back to when he met Luke, in 2002 when he was a teenager, when he lived in Thornmere. He had come out to his parents and a close friend, who must have told everyone because his whole school seemed to know. From the first time he met Luke, who was a bad boy, living with his aunt and uncle, he was attracted to him. They became friends and did a lot of things together, bringing James out of his shell a bit. He fell in love with Luke and there’s an odd attraction between the two. Luke for his part seems to like girls or does he? What he really wants is his for father, who is in prison, and expected out soon, to come get him, so he can have his dad back. James goes on to live his life but Luke is always been on his mind, even today. This is an intense, well-written novel, that looks at life as a gay teenager in a time when it was still not accepted like it is today. You follow James on his quest for love and acceptance, which he gets from Luke. This is a great debut novel from author Hewitt.
