Eleanor and Bolt are twins, born in 1901 in Ohio. They’re psychic twins who can read each other’s minds. Their father, Jasper, was a mentalist, and they never met him. Their mother died in 1914, when they were 13, and then Uncle Charlie, who was a friend of Jasper’s, comes and claims the children to try and use them to make money. He’s a bad guy, and the kids poison him one night and take off. When they reach Iowa, they’re adopted by a traveling carnival owner, Harland Jengling, and go on the road with them. It’s a tough time at first living this life, and Bolt starts to bond with some of the performers. Charlie, who didn’t die, is hot on the trail of the children, determined to take them back, so he can make money off of them. It leads to a stunning climax, and their lives will never be the same again. This is an intense, well-written, page-turner of a novel. At its core, it’s about family with the two children, and then the carnival people. Author Dan Chaon has written one heck of a novel.
