The year is 1965, and Jude Rice, who is 41, is still living with her mother, Ernestine, who has been abusive to Jude all her life and still is. Jude has decided that she has had enough and is leaving. A big fight ensues, and Jude ends up killing her and leaving her body, and taking off. She ends up in Georgia, in a small town called Whitnee, near the Okefenokee swamps. She’s directed to an old house in the woods, named Candle, which she makes her new home. The house is haunted, and she shares it with ghosts, who sometimes become angry with her. Then one day, a woman named Nemoira arrives, and her life is changed. She soon finds herself with feelings she never had before, primal urges, and soon learns a shocking secret about this woman who has come to her house. Then, after living in this house for 13 years, she returns home to face her past and figure out her future. This is a Southern Gothic haunting story about new beginnings and strange happenings. The ghosts and shocking reveals enhance this good debut novel.
