The small town of Dahlmouth, Va, is the setting for this eerie novel. Rachel Keenan is the chief of police, married to Finn and they have two girls. They had a son, who died months ago when Finn was driving drunk. Their marriage is in shambles, has been for years and they stay together for the kids. When a mutilated body is found in the woods, Rachel starts to investigate but doesn’t get much help. Then a young girl goes missing and Rachel’s oldest daughter, Charlie, starts acting strange. It turns out there’s an evil force in the deepest woods that is coming for the people in the town. Rachel tries to figure out how to save her kids, her husband and the whole town, before they’re all taken to Nowhere (the place in the woods) for good. This is an intense, scary novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering who and what is going on in this town. Throw in some social commentary and family issues, and there’s a lot going on to keep you engaged. This is a great debut novel from author Gunn.
