Rhea has just turned 18 and is visited by the lawyer of her late mother, who died when she was five. She learns her mother left her $10 million dollars and her estate. Turns out her mother was a famous country singer, Lulabelle Powers. Her father died before she was born, and Rhea was lied to about her parents her whole life. Rhen learns that the women in her family history die at the age of 33, and it’s rumored thay a deal was made with the devil many years ago. Rhea heads off to Nashville to her new home, her old mother’s friends, and starts to learn about her mother. The book alternates chapters where we follow along with Lulabelle’s story and in the present time with Rhea, who has found love and is married. Both women in their times try to figure out how to end the curse, and it leads to dramatic reveals you don’t see coming. This is a well-written, intense novel about love and wanting to live. Following along with both women’s journeys is both heartwarming and at times sad. A perfect late summer beach read.
