The setting is in the 1950s in Manhattan and Sam Monroe, who is an assistant DA, is at the bar waiting for Laura Nielson to show up. They dated for a while ago and she broke his heart. She called him out of the blue needing to see him about something important and never showed up. He goes to her penthouse apartment and finds her dead. He takes her diary and a couple of other things and is determined to find her killer. Sam is the prime suspect in the murder and is beaten by a dirty cop, Johnnie Turner, and taken into custody. He’s released and starts interviewing people about Laura and teams up with a madam, who is killed and a P.I. named DJ Ryan, who Laura had previously hired. They discover shocking secrets about Laura’s past, and run up against a crime boss and a group of dirty cops who want Sam dead. Sam has to be careful who he trusts and stay alive long enough to find the killer. This novel is Great! Fans of noir-style books will enjoy this one a lot. The two lead characters of Sam and DJ are well-written and with the twists and turns this novel takes you will not want to put it down. I am hoping this will be a series with these characters. One of the best books of the year.
