The year is 1943 and the setting is Algiers, where Dottie Lincoln, is part of the WAAC, and has a group of women she oversees. They spend their days doing paperwork and at night attend dances to keep the men’s spirits up. Sometimes the men get a bit handsy and she has to step in. On this night she watches the body of one of her girls fall off the roof of the building where a dance is taking place. At first, it seems like suicide, but Dottie doesn’t buy it, and it turns out to be murder. She assists in the investigation of the murder, and it leads to shocking reveals, including her own life, she is soon accused of being a German spy because of her past. She soon figures out what is going on and her life is in danger and she may not live long enough to reveal what’s going on. This is the debut novel from author Kristi Jones and it’s a good one. Dottie is a strong woman who you follow along with as she fights for justice in a time when it’s a man’s world. Fans of historical novels will enjoy this one.
