Author Jennifer Chiaverini is back with her newest historical fiction novel featuring Mary Todd Lincoln. This time the story looks at Mary’s being sent to a hospital after being found to be insane. The action was taken from her only remaining son Robert. Mary had tried to commit suicide. Now she’s at Bellevue Place and she’s not happy about it.
When her sister Elizabeth finds out she’s shocked. Although they have had up and down relationship, she only wants the best for Mary as do her other sisters. The novel is told in different time spans by different sisters and looks at the whole families lives over the years. The marriages, births and deaths over many years. It also looks at the marriage of Abe and Mary, the loss of her kids, the White House years and Mary’s personality quirks.
I love historical fiction books and Jennifer is a master of these. I learned so much new information about Mary, Abe and her family that I never knew about before. A well researched and written book that is perfect for summer.
You can pick up Mrs. Lincoln’s Sisters in stores on Tuesday, June 2nd from William Morrow.
